Today In History: Spurs Sack Jose Mourinho

The announcement came less than a week before Spurs were due to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Ryan Mason was placed in interim charge and Spurs lost the Cup final 1-0.

Mourinho was appointed in November 2019 to replace Mauricio Pochettino and guided the team from 14th to 6th position at the end of the season.

The former Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Real Madrid manager won once in his final five league games in charge of Spurs before chairman Daniel Levy pulled the plug on his appointment.

Levy said on the club’s official website: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.

“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the (Covid-19) pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”

Mourinho returned to management in the summer of 2021 at AS Roma and led them to the inaugural UEFA Conference League in his first season in charge before leaving the Italian capital earlier this year.
