Today In History: Lionel Messi Receives First And Only Red Card In Club Career
Lionel Messi was shown his first and so far only red card in club football on this day in 2021.
It came on his 753rd appearance for Barcelona during a 3-2 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Referee Gil Manzano showed Messi a straight red card for violent conduct after the Argentina superstar took a swing at Asier Villalibre in extra time.
It remains Messi's only red card in 867 games of club football for Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain and Inter Miami.
Overall, Messi has been sent off three times in his career, with two of those coming for Argentina on his debut and in the 2019 Copa America.
