Today In History: Scholes Comes Out Of Retirement To Feature In Manchester Derby
On this day in 2012, Paul Scholes came out of retirement to help Manchester United beat Manchester City 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium in an FA Cup third round tie.
Scholes had called it quits the previous summer but announced his intentions to resume his career just an hour before the game and was promptly named in the Manchester United squad by Sir Alex Ferguson.
The then 37-year-old was introduced for his second Red Devils debut in the second half for Nani.
United were beaten to the Premier League title by their 'noisy neighbours' that season but Scholes helped them reclaim it the following season before retiring from the game for good alongside Sir Alex.
In all, Scholes won 11 Premier League titles in his two spells with Manchester United.
