Man City Left With 13 Senior Players As Injuries Pile Up For Guardiola
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have just 13 senior players left after suffering more injuries in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
Already without the likes of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Kyle Walker, Oscar Bobb, and Jack Grealish, City suffered an early setback when Manuel Akanji limped off during the warm up.
Savinho and Ruben Dias were also taken off with fitness issues as Guardiola opted not to risk Erling Haaland despite City pressing for an equaliser.
Guardiola named just seven substitutes in Manchester City's previous two games against Sparta Prague and Southampton.
"We have 13 players, we are in real difficulties," Guardiola said after the Tottenham loss.
"The guys that play, they finish most of them with problems and we'll see how they recover.
"I think we are in trouble, because in nine years we've never been in the situation with so many injuries.
"The players make a step forward, more together than ever, and we will try to do this week in this short time of recovery."
"Tomorrow we have two goalkeepers and Erling Haaland in the training session."
"The rest, we don't have anything else."
"If these guys don’t come back as quickly as possible, we’ll struggle, because we cannot sustain with just 14, 15 players for the season," he said.
"We need the players to come back."
Manchester City are next in action against Bournemouth on Saturday before facing Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday.
