Scaloni To Stay On As Argentina Manager

Scaloni said he was considering his position after Argentina's FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Brazil in November.

The former West Ham United defender has a contract until after the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, where Argentina will go in as defending champions.

"There was a lot of talking, but I always told the truth. There were moments to think and know what to do. It was not a farewell or anything," Scaloni said in an interview with Italian television.

"I was thinking about how the national team goes on and the moment also to allow space for the youngsters, and this is important for us. It was a moment of reflection."

Scaloni has been in charge of La Albiceleste since August 2018 when he replaced Jorge Sampaoli in the role and led them to the Copa America title in 2021.

The 45-year-old then delivered Argentina's first World Cup trophy since 1986 with victory over France at Qatar 2022.

Argentina are top of South America's World Cup qualifying group with 15 points from six games.
