However the clause is only valid from the ending of May to the ending of June.

The Brazil international is reportedly attracting interest from Paris Saint Germain, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyon in January 2022 and signed a contract extension to the summer of 2028 in October last year.

He has made 45 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring four goals and assisting eight times.

Despite the existence of the release clause, Howe is keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old.

"Having that [release clause] was well planned and structured by the club," said Howe on Friday.

"We don’t want constant speculation, it’s not healthy for the player or for us. It goes without saying we want to keep him, I want to build our team around him.

"His form has been very good and he seems very happy and settled.

"He’ll be thinking about a very busy summer ahead, where hopefully we can take the team - with him a big part of it. But we aren’t in control of that so let’s see."

Newcastle are seventh on the Premier League table ahead of hosting Sheffield United on Saturday.
