Mats Hummels Announces Departure From Borussia Dortmund
Mats Hummels has announced he will leave Borussia Dortmund when his contract expires at the end of this month.
Hummels has spent a combined 13 years at Dortmund either side of a three-year stint at Bayern Munich between 2016 and 2019.
The 35-year-old is the second high profile departure from Dortmund in the space of 24 hours after manager Edin Terzic departed his post on Thursday.
Hummels made 508 appearances in total for Dortmund, scoring 38 goals.
He won two Bundesliga titles, two German Cups and one German Super Cup.
Hummels also finished runners up with Dortmund in the Champions League on two occasions.
In a statement, the central defender said: “Borussia Dortmund fans, my time at the Black & Yellows has come to an end after 13 years in total. It was a huge honour and a joy for me to play for BVB for such a long time, and to be almost ever-present on the journey from 13th place in the table in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund represents today.
"This club and its fans are special – and for me they’re much more than that. I would also like to thank all the staff at BVB, who do outstanding work for this club, plus of course the countless fantastic coaches and teammates I have worked and played alongside.
"I hope that I can see you all again celebrating on Borsigplatz as soon as possible. Until then, I will be cheering for this club from afar – and hopefully often in the stadium as well. I will miss you all.”
Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund’s managing director for sport, added:
“Mats was one of the driving forces behind Borussia Dortmund over the last 15 years. He won lots of trophies, and without question his personal crowning achievement was winning the World Cup in 2014.
"Mats’ play as a centre-back was and is outstanding, and entire generations of players would love to have his ability to play the ball with the outside of his foot. We have now decided to go our separate ways, and of course it’s never easy for anyone involved to make decisions like this.
"Mats will for ever be part of BVB’s history. We have so much to thank him for, and he also has a lot to thank this extraordinary club for. We wish him all the best for the future.”
Hummels has been capped 78 times by the German national team but is not part of their squad at EURO 2024.
