Southampton Complete Signing Of Brereton Diaz For £7m From Villarreal
Chile forward Ben Brereton Diaz has joined Southampton from Villarreal for £7m.
The 25-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Premier League newcomers.
Brereton Diaz joined Villarreal from Blackburn Rovers last summer but failed to score in 20 appearances for the Yellow Submarines before getting shipped on loan to Sheffield United for the second half of the season.
He scored six goals in 14 appearances for the Blades, who still ending up getting relegated from the Premier League.
“I’m absolutely buzzing. It’s been smooth these past couple of days, and I’m happy to get everything sorted and signed. I’m really excited to meet everyone, it’s great to be involved with this great club," Brereton Diaz said.
“Watching the club when I was younger, it was always in the Premier League. Obviously last season, the way the team played, they went down but they bounced straight back up as a team.
"Also the gaffer as well – everything has aligned together, and I think it’s an amazing club. I can’t wait to get started.”
Brereton Diaz will likely replace Che Adams, who joined Torino last week after his contract with Southampton expired.
Born in England to an English father and a Chilean mother, Brereton Diaz played youth football for his country of birth before switching allegiance to the South American country in 2021.
Brereton Diaz has made 33 appearances for Chile, scoring seven goals.
