Luis Suarez Announces Retirement From International Football At 37
Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 37.
The Inter Miami striker will play his last game for his country against Paraguay in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Saturday.
Suarez has amassed 142 caps for Uruguay and his 69 goals is the most in their history.
Suarez played in four FIFA World Cups and five Copa America tournaments, winning South America's flagship tournament in 2011.
Suarez has been involved in a number of controversial incidents while playing for his country, including his infamous handball on the goal-line that prevented Ghana from reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2010 and receiving a nine-match ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
"I've been thinking about this and analysing this. I believe this is the right time," a tearful Suarez told reporters on Monday.
"I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I'll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time.
"That 19-year old kid is now a veteran player, an older player, however you want to call it, with an incredible history with the national team, that will give his life for the team."
"We did go through difficult moments. There were many," he added. "Personally, it was worse for me after my massive mistake in 2014.
"But there's nothing that I would reproach."
Suarez has played for Ajax Amsterdam, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during his illustrious career.
