Courtois Suffers Fresh Knee Injury Ahead Of Real Madrid Comeback

The Belgium goalkeeper ruptured the anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee back in August and was ruled out until April.

Courtois was into the final stages of his recovery and was expecting to return to competitive action next month but Real Madrid have announced that the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has suffered a torn internal meniscus in his right knee.

"Following tests carried out today, Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee," Real Madrid said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The injury occurred during today's training session. The injury will be monitored."

The unfortunate news means Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti will continue to pick between Andriy Lunin and Kepa Arrizabalaga for the remainder of the campaign.

Courtois also faces a race against time to be fit for EURO 2024 this summer.

Courtois has made 230 appearances for Real Madrid since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2018.

The 31-year-old has won two La Liga titles, one UEFA Champions League, one Copa del Rey, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup.
