Wolves find themselves in 19th position following the defeat, with just two wins recorded in their 16 games, losing 11 of those.

Their 40 goals conceded is the most in the top flight and they are now five points adrift of safety.

O'Neil was appointed as Wolves manager just before the start of the 2023/2024 season after Julen Lopetegui stepped down and led them to a 14th place finish.

Chairman Jeff Shi said in a statement: "We're very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future."

Portuguese manager Vitor Pereira, currently in charge of Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia, has been heavily linked with the vacant post at Molineux.

Wolves are away to Leicester City in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
