Ter Stegen Faces Eight Months Out After Suffering Knee Injury Against Villarreal
Barcelona have confirmed that goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has suffered a serious knee injury and is set to undergo surgery.
Initial reports in Spain suggest the Germany international could be set for up to eight months out, ruling him out for the rest of the 2024/2025 season.
Ter Stegen suffered the injury on Sunday during Barcelona's 5-1 win over Villarreal in La Liga.
The 32-year-old landed awkwardly after jumping to catch a ball and was carried off on a stretcher in visible pain on the cusp of half time.
He was replaced by Inaki Pena in goal.
"Tests carried out on the first team player Marc ter Stegen confirm that he has a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee," Barcelona said in a statement.
"On Monday afternoon he will undergo a surgical process and once complete a new update will be released."
Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2014 and has won five La Liga titles and one Champions League trophy, among numerous other honours during his time at the club.
