The 34-year-old had been in interim charge since March, when he replaced Valerien Ismael, and has since taken charge of seven games, drawing five times, losing once and winning once.

Watford are 15th on the Championship table, with their status in the second tier secured for another season.

Cleverley retired from football last season due to injury, having played for Manchester United, where he won the Premier League title in the 2012/2013 season, Aston Villa, Leicester City, Wigan Athletic, Everton and Watford.

A club statement read: "Watford FC is delighted to confirm the permanent appointment of Tom Cleverley as the Hornets’ Head Coach.

"Since taking the role on an interim basis last month, the 34-year-old has guided the team through a run of seven Sky Bet Championship fixtures – five of which against teams in the league’s top seven.

"The Hornets have lost just once during that period, keeping four clean sheets on the way to five draws and one win."

Cleverley won 13 caps for the England national team.
