The European champions shelved pre-arranged plans to make their presence felt at the event when they received information that Vinicius Junior had been pipped to the topmost award for the night by Manchester City's Rodri.

Real Madrid were named club of the year and their manager Carlo Ancelotti won coach of the year but there were no representatives from the Spanish champions to receive the prizes.

Vinicius scored 24 goals and set up 11 more last season as Real Madrid won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League while Rodri was instrumental in Manchester City's Premier League triumph as well as Spain's EURO 2024 success.

Tebas feels Real Madrid did not show sportsmanship by opting out of the event.

"I am a Real Madrid fan. The most important values of this club are being a gentleman and shaking hands when you lose," he told l'Equipe.

"I think Real Madrid lost that spirit a long time ago. They should have gone to the ceremony and not questioned France Football's system, which is transparent, with 100 journalists voting.

"Real's victimhood is unnecessary and exaggerated. I don't know where they want to go."
