Inter Milan Goalie Yann Sommer Quits International Football
After 12 years with the Switzerland national team, goalkeeper Yann Sommer has announced his retirement from international football.
Since making his debut in 2012, Sommer has gone on to make 94 appearances between the sticks for his country.
The 35-year-old Inter Milan goalkeeper played at six major international tournaments, including three FIFA World Cups.
His final tournament for Switzerland was at EURO 2024 which concluded with a quarterfinal defeat to England on penalties.
"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my career as a goalkeeper for the Swiss national team," Sommer posted on Instagram.
"With the conclusion of another great final round at the European Championship in our neighbouring country Germany, where I previously spent unforgettable years in the Bundesliga, the time has now come to say goodbye."
Pierluigi Tami, director of the Swiss national team, said: “On behalf of the Swiss Football Association, but also personally, I would like to thank Yann from the bottom of my heart for what he has done for us. Yann is not only an excellent goalkeeper, but also a role model for many athletes as a person, and his career is a prime example for young players.”
Sommer has also featured for FC Basel, Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich during his illustrious career.
