Emery Wants In-Form Watkins Included In England's EURO 2024 Squad
Ollie Watkins should be a shoo-in contender for a spot in England's EURO 2024 squad, according to Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.
Watkins scored a brace to help Champions League-chasing Villa claim a 3-2 win at Luton Town over the weekend.
The 28-year-old has the most goal contributions of any Premier League player this season, with 16 goals and 10 assists recorded.
Watkins has 21 goals across all competitions, with Harry Kane the only Englishman with more goals in Europe's top leagues.
The former Brentford striker has nine caps and three goals for England but is still to play at his first international tournament.
Emery believes it is only a matter of time before Watkins gets his chance on the big stage.
“Every player is showing in their teams their quality, their capacity, their commitment, their performance,” said Emery.
“Then of course, the coach of the national team has to decide. But I think he deserves to be there.”
Speaking after the win over Luton, Watkins said: "If I said I wasn't thinking about the Euros I would be lying to you."
"I have played Premier League football for a number of years now. I missed out on the last Euros squad because it was my first season in the Premier League.
"I am scoring, I am established, so it is down to the manager if he wants to pick me."
