Germany Appoint Joshua Kimmich As New Captain
Joshua Kimmich has been appointed as the new captain of the Germany national team.
Kimmich will begin his official role for the first time when Germany face Hungary in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Bayern Munich defender, who can also operate in midfield, has captained Germany in 17 previous occasions out of his 91 caps so far.
Previous captain Ilkay Gundogan retired from national team duty after EURO 2024.
Kimmich will be assisted by Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz.
Speaking to reporters about his decision, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann said: "The captain places the team's opinion with the coaching team. Kimmich was the logical successor."
"He leads the way with his mentality. We have a very good mix with these three players."
"The team council is a very good, responsible group," Nagelsmann added.
"We selected it well; the players were all very happy and are keen to fill their roles."
