AFCON Hosts Ivory Coast Fire Manager Jean-Louis Gasset

The 70-year-old Frenchman has been relieved of his duties after Ivory Coast finished third in their group behind Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.

Ivory Coast started the tournament with a 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau before losing 1-0 to Nigeria and 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea.

The two-time Africa champions could still sneak into the knockout rounds as one of the four best third-placed sides.

But the manner of their heaviest ever home defeat to the unfancied minnows Equatorial Guinea has seen Gasset lose his job.

“The Federation Ivoirienne de Football expresses its regrets for the performance of the Elephants during the group phase of the CAN (AFCON) 2023,” the FIF statement said.

“However, it remains convinced of the potential of our football team, and calls for the unity of all for the upcoming events.”

Gasset had been in charge of the Ivorians since 2022.
