Enzo Fernandez In Trouble At Chelsea Over Derogatory France Song
Chelsea have launched disciplinary proceedings against Enzo Fernandez for posting a derogatory song about French players on social media.
On his Instagram live after Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final on Monday, Fernandez was seen with some of his international colleagues singing the song which has caused widespread uproar, with many describing it as racist.
The French FA have filed a complaint to FIFA about the song while Chelsea's France defender, Wesley Fofana described it as "uninhibited racism" on social media.
Fernandez has since come out to issue an apology, saying: "I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations."
"The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words.
"I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.
"That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character.
"I am truly sorry."
But Chelsea will take up the issue and begin their own investigation into the conduct of their £107m midfielder.
"Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable," the statement read.
"We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.
"We acknowledge and appreciate our player's public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.
"The club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure."
Chelsea currently have seven French players in their first team squad.
Argentina beat France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar.
