Xavi Rescinds Decision To Leave Barcelona
Xavi Hernandez has rescinded his decision to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
The 44-year-old announced in January that he will quit this summer amid a poor run of results.
But since that announcement, results have improved remarkably, with Barcelona embarking on 13-game unbeaten run prior to their recent losses to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League and Real Madrid in La Liga.
A meeting with club President Joan Laporta and Vice President Rafa Juste on Wednesday night has led to a change of heart and Xavi will remain at post until at least the end of his contract in the summer of 2025.
"We had a meeting with the coach and the president in which Xavi showed us his commitment," he told reporters.
"He is a Barça guy, he is the coach who can lead our project and our young players from the club. I am convinced that he will do a great job, I am very happy for him because he is a great 'culé.'
"I am happy [with Xavi staying] because I always defended the continuity of the project he started two-and-a-half years ago.
"We have not talked [in the meeting] about changes in our team at all. Xavi has shown his enthusiasm and we must support him and his staff to continue with this project."
Xavi replaced Ronald Koeman as Barcelona manager in November 2021 and won the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga title in his first full season in charge.
Xavi won eight La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, three Copa del Reys among other honours during his time as a player at Barcelona.
He also won two European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain.
