Today In History: Ex-Ghana Winger Christian Atsu Dies In Devastating Turkey Earthquake

Exactly a year ago today on February 6, 2023, the devastating twin earthquakes in Turkey and Syria claimed the lives of more than 60,000 people, among them was former Ghana and Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu.

Atsu was playing for Turkish side Hatayspor at the time and his death came just hours after scoring a last-minute winner against Kasimpasa in the Super Lig.

Atsu was 31 and amidst conflicting reports about his potential survival, his body was recovered from the wreckage two weeks after the earthquake.

Atsu was capped 65 times for Ghana and was named player of the tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Atsu counted FC Porto, Everton and Bournemouth among his former clubs.

Atsu is survived by wife Marie-Claire Rupio Atsu and their three children.
