However, the Liverpool forward could rejoin his international colleagues in the Ivory Coast if Egypt make it as far as the semi-final stage.

Salah limped off with a hamstring injury in the first half of Egypt's 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday and has been ruled out of Monday's game against Cape Verde as well as a potential round of 16 game if the Pharoahs make it that far.

A statement from the seven-time Africa champions read: “The Egyptian FA announces that Salah will now travel to England to receive treatment with the hope that he will join the Egyptian national team if it qualifies for the semi-finals”.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has also confirmed Salah is heading back to his club side for treatment.

Egypt have two points from their opening two games at AFCON 2023 and will need to beat already-qualified Cape Verde to get a spot in the knockout rounds.

Salah scored a late penalty to salvage a point for the Egyptians in a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their opening game.
