Maresca Concerned By Chelsea's Defensive Frailties Ahead Of New Season
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been left concerned by his side's defensive frailties ahead of the new season.
The Blues lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in their latest pre-season encounter on Tuesday.
Chelsea have lost three of their five pre-season games so far, conceding 12 goals.
Under Mauricio Pochettino last season, the Stamford Bridge outfit conceded 63 goals in the Premier League, the most among the top eight sides.
Responding to their defeat against the European champions, Maresca said: "One of my first meetings with the squad was about the amount of goals we conceded last year with the defensive line very high.
"We are not working on defensive lines so high. It’s a habit last year, or years ago, I don't know.
"We are trying to drop the defensive line a little bit, usually about four or five metres, just to have some advantage.
"Last year we conceded many goals with this problem. Hopefully, we can solve it soon."
Chelsea face Inter Milan in their final pre-season fixture on Saturday before taking on Manchester City in their Premier League opener next weekend.
