Inter Miami Name Mascherano As New Manager
Javier Mascherano has been named as the new manager of Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.
The former Argentina, Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder is replacing Gerardo Martino, who resigned last week.
Mascherano was recently in charge of Argentina's Olympic football team, who reached the quarterfinal at Paris 2024.
The 40-year-old will be managing his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets.
"To be able to lead a club like Inter Miami is an honour for me, and a privilege I will strive to make the most of," Mascherano said after penning a contract to run through 2027.
"I was drawn to the organization's undeniable ambition and the infrastructure it has to support it.
"I'm looking forward to working with the people at Inter Miami to help the club reach new heights, and to give the fans more unforgettable moments."
Mascherano started his playing career with River Plate before turning out for clubs including Brazil’s Corinthians, West Ham United, Liverpool and Barcelona before moving to Hebei China Fortune in 2018.
His last club before retiring in 2020 was Argentine side Estudiantes.
Mascherano's most successful spell in club football was at Barcelona, where he won five La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, five Copa del Reys among other honours.
Mascherano was a member of the Argentina side that lost the 2014 FIFA World Cup final to Germany but has two gold medals from the 2004 and 2008 Olympic games.
