Genoa Appoint Patrick Vieira As New Manager
Serie A strugglers Genoa have appointed former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as the club's new manager.
Genoa sacked Alberto Gilardino on Tuesday after a difficult start to the season that sees them in 17th position on the Serie A table and two wins from their opening 12 games.
Vieira is making a return to management after leaving French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in the summer.
He has also managed Major League Soccer side New York City, Crystal Palace and OGC Nice in the past.
"Genoa CFC announces that it has entrusted the technical management of the first team to Patrick Vieira," the club said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The new coach will lead the first training session after the formalization of the contract in the Villa Rostan headquarters this afternoon. After a professional career, between 2011 and 2015, as Executive Development Football in the Manchester City Academy, Vieira has coached the teams of New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg. Welcome mister!"
Vieira's first game in charge of Genoa will come against Cagliari on Sunday.
Vieira, who won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and European Championship in 2000 with France, was captain of the ‘Invincibles’ Arsenal side who went the entire 2003/2004 Premier League season unbeaten.
