Former CAF President Issa Hayatou Dies At 77

Hayatou died in the France capital Paris following a long illness.

The Cameroonian led African football for 29 years from 1988 to 2017.

Under Hayatou's tutelage, Africa hosted its first ever FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and championed an increase in the number of African teams participating in FIFA's flagship competition.

He held the role of acting FIFA president briefly in 2015 when Sepp Blatter was suspended.

In a post on Instagram, FIFA president Gianni Infantino paid tribute to Hayatou with a message which read: "Saddened to hear of the passing of former Caf president, former Fifa president ad interim, Fifa vice president and Fifa council member, Issa Hayatou."

"A passionate sports fan, he dedicated his life to sports administration.

"On behalf of Fifa, condolences go to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him. Rest in peace."
