Algeria Sack 2019 AFCON-Winning Coach Belmadi
Djamel Belmadi is the latest manager to lose his job for poor performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Belmadi has been relieved of his duties as boss of the Algeria national team following their group stage exit in Ivory Coast.
The Desert Foxes finished bottom of their group after a surprise 1-0 loss to Mauritania in their final game followed draws against Angola and Burkina Faso.
Belmadi had been in charge of Algeria since 2018, leading them to the AFCON title in 2019.
However, Algeria finished bottom of their group as defending champions at AFCON 2021 and failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Algeria Football Federation president Walid Sadi confirmed the news of Belmadi's departure, saying: “I met the national coach to discuss the consequences of this bitter elimination, and we reached an amicable agreement to break his contract.
"We thank the coach for everything he has done for the team and we wish him good luck for the rest of his career.”
Belmadi's contract should have expired in 2026.
