Alaba To Miss Rest Of Season With ACL Injury

The Austria international is also a huge doubt for the upcoming European championships in Germany next summer.

Alaba was taken off the field after 35 minutes after going down clutching his knee as Real Madrid rose to the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win over the Yellow Submarines.

The 31-year-old is the third Real Madrid player to suffer an ACL injury this season after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao suffered similar fates earlier in the campaign.

Alaba's injury has left Real Madrid thin at the back, with Nacho Fernandez and Antonio Rudiger the only fit senior center backs currently available to manager Carlo Ancelotti.

A statement from the club on Alaba’s injury read: “Following tests carried out on our player David Alaba, he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.”

Ancelotti said on Alaba’s injury: “The medical report says it’s an ACL injury. It’s a shame, we are very sad. Another player has gone down. I’ve never had three ACL injuries in four months, it’s unbelievable. (Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao).

“We have nothing to do but let the team continue to do what it has done with all the injuries we’ve had. We’ve done even more than everyone thought we would”.
