Ex-Chelsea Left-Back Ryan Bertrand Announces Retirement At 34

Bertrand has gone one year without a club after being released by Leicester City in the summer of 2023.

The former England international, who won 19 caps for the Three Lions, started the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich as Chelsea triumphed on penalties to be crowned European champions for a first time.

That appearance made Bertrand the first player to make his Champions League debut in the final.

He also won the FA Cup and Europa League with Chelsea before spending six years in total at Southampton, making 240 appearances for the Saints.

"I will be retiring from football," Bertrand announced live on Sky Sports.

"It's been a little while but I get asked a lot of questions - 'When are you coming back, what are you doing?'

"So, just to make that official I am retiring and very much looking forward to the next steps."

During his time at Chelsea, Bertrand had loan spells at Bournemouth, Norwich, Reading, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.
