Eredivisie Cancels Season Without Promotion And Relegation Amid Coronavirus Fears

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has abandoned the current season of the Eredivisie with no promotion and relegation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This decision was arrived at following an announcement from the Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte stating that all sporting activities  has been ban until at least September 1.

Ajax and AZ Alkmaar led the Eredivisie before the season was paused, level on points after 26 games, with the Amsterdam-based club ahead on goal difference. Erik ten Hag’s men will not be crowned champions, and no clubs will be relegated or promoted.

For the first time since 1944-45, thus during the second World War, the Dutch top flight will not have a champion.

European places will be given out based on the current standings, meaning both Ajax and AZ Alkmaar will go into the Champions League qualifying stages.

Feyenoord, meanwhile, will be heading to the Europa League group stage as they sat third, while PSV and Willem II will enter the Europa League in the third and second round of qualifiers respectively, subject to Uefa's approval.

ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk will remain in the competition despite being in the automatic relegation places with 19 and 16 points respectively, while Cambuur, who topped the second tier and held an 11-point gap will not be promoted.
