Kompany is on course to leading Burnley back into the Premier League less than a year after taking charge of the Clarets.
Burnley are top of the Championship table, 16 points ahead of the side in third, with the top two guaranteed automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Kompany has also got Burnley playing an attractive brand of football, different to what they were used to under previous long-serving boss Sean Dyche.
As a player, Kompany joined Man City from Hamburg in 2008 and starred for eleven seasons, making 323 appearances and captaining the side to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.
Former City defender Onuoha believes Kompany is so far ahead of his contemporaries and is primed to be a potential successor to Pep Guardiola in future.
He exclusively told talkSPORT: “It is unfair that Vini [Kompany] is coaching in the Championship because he is so far ahead of the other managers that are in that division.
“From the way he looks at the game, the way he is with the players. Everything. He is a million miles ahead of all of them.
“You look at it, [Burnley] are 16 points clear of the team that are third so they are almost certain to go up automatically.
"Some managers have really good ideas but don’t know how to implement them.
“But first he has to command their respect because its him firstly, but he will say things like ‘how would you like to get more touches on the ball?’
"Who is going to say no? So this is how to do it. ‘How would you like to score more goals?’
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, ‘well we are going to press higher, and this is the why’.
"So he always has something at the end of the conversation that will bring people on board.
“From a preparations standpoint, he has got it sorted. He’s got the ideas, he’s got the vision, he has played under some really good managers but he is still very much himself.
"The fact that you can take Burnley as a team that doesn’t really want to play into a team that insists on playing, and find success with it, says a lot about him.”
“The best of all, he is still just a psycho. Some of the team talks I’ve heard him give to the team, he’s like ‘I hate these players, go and kill them’.”
He added: “In the Championship, you’ve got some young managers. So he’s 37 now, but there are people managing at 77 so he might manage City in the future.
“But knows what City will look like in the future, anything could happen.”
