Klopp Demands VAR Improvement

Klopp Demands VAR Improvement

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has called for an improvement to the Video Assistant Referee(VAR) system after another weekend of Premier League action was riddled with controversy.

VAR made its debut in the English Premier League this season in a bid to improve refereeing decisions but so far it has brought about more confusion.

Opinions about the system remain divided, with many football pundits uncertain about whether the true aim of VAR has been achieved.

In the top-of-the-table Premier League clash between Klopp’ Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the weekend, VAR was subjected to further scrutiny after the champions were denied two penalties for handball incidents, the first from which the hosts scored the opener in an eventual 3-1 win.

In Liverpool’s previous game against Aston Villa, Roberto Firmino had a goal contentiously ruled out with the Premier League clarifying that the Brazilian’s armpit was in an offside position.

Ahead of the last international break of the year, Europe’s elite coaches met in Switzerland on Monday and Klopp used the opportunity to call for an ironing out of mistakes from the system.

"VAR can be improved, it can. It will never be 100 per cent accurate, everybody knows that. But there are a couple of things that are not right," Klopp told the conference.

"With VAR, handball, offside, it is clear we have to keep on improving.

"There were good ideas from UEFA (about) how we can sort things from the referees, so everybody is in on it.

"There is still space for mistakes. These things are done by human beings and none of us is perfect. Nobody is asking for perfection, you just want to have the right decisions."
