For the second time in just over one month, Senegal got the better of Egypt on penalties; this time for a spot in Qatar 2022.
Egypt defeated Senegal 1-0 in Cairo last week and the Teranga Lions matched that result in Dakar on Tuesday, meaning penalties were needed to separate the two sides.
Salah missed from the spot but Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane was on hand to bury the decisive penalty and take Senegal through.
Back at club level, Salah is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, having scored 28 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.
The former Chelsea forward has already helped Liverpool win the Carabao Cup this season and the Reds are still in contention for the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Van Dijk is confident that Salah will put his disappointment behind him and fire Liverpool to more glory this season.
"Well obviously, I feel sorry for Mo and for Egypt, but football is sometimes like this," Van Dijk told reporters.
"I am sure he will turn the disappointment into success for the rest of the season.
"We still have everything to play for so there is a lot of things still to achieve for him."
