Son was red carded by referee Martin Atkinson for the challenge on Andre Gomes that saw the Portuguese international suffer a horrific ankle injury.
Son’s challenge on the former Barcelona midfielder was innocuous but the damage it inflicted was horrible as Gomes clashed into Serge Aurier before writhing down in pain.
Referee Martin Atkinson initially pulled out his yellow card but after seeing the damage on Gomes and consulting with VAR officials, he decided to change the colour to red.
The Premier League released a statement shortly after to clarify why the South Korean was sent off which read: “The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge.”
Tottenham went on the surrender their solitary lead in the 1-1 draw, and manager Mauricio Pochettino was less than impressed with VAR on how the Son situation was handled.
Son will miss Tottenham’s next three league games against Sheffield United, West Ham United and Bournemouth if the decision to suspend him is upheld.
The 27-year-old South Korean, who has scored five goals and provided three assists in 13 appearances in all competitions this season, will then be back for the trip to Manchester United on December 4.
Everton have announced that Gomes has undergone successful surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
