Di Canio Slams Icardi, Labels PSG ‘Home Of Undisciplined Players’

Outspoken former Sunderland manager Paulo di Canio has slammed Mauro Icardi for his move to Paris Saint Germain and aimed a thinly veiled dig at the French champions, labelling them ‘the home of undisciplined players.’

Icardi penned a two-year extension to his contract at the San Siro before joining Thomas Tuchel’s side, who reportedly have the option to make the deal permanent for €70m at the end of the season.

Prior to Icardi’s move on transfer deadline day, the Argentine had endured a turbulent period at Inter Milan after being stripped off the captaincy in the second half of last season and being frozen out of new manager Antonio Conte’s squad for the first two games of this campaign.

Icardi was linked with Juventus, Napoli, AS Monaco and Atletico Madrid before landing in the French capital.

Di Canio, who was involved in a number of high-profile controversial incidents during his time as a player, including being handed an 11-game ban for pushing a referee in 1998, has berated Icardi for making the move.

"But seriously, why did Ancelotti want someone like Icardi, unable to apologise to his team-mates for the words of his wife-agent," Di Canio said according to Il Mattino.

"And then, also from a technical point of view, Carlo needs an imaginative striker like [Dries] Mertens. Icardi scores only when the ball arrives with a cross from the end line. For the rest, incapable of doing anything a modern striker should be able to do.

"If he does not score he never gives a hand to the team. Him at PSG? No wonder, because the French club is the natural landing place for undisciplined players."
