The Red Devils suffered elimination from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday with a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United have now failed to reach the semi-finals of Europe's premier club competition since 2011 and have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions in England.
Currently fifth on the Premier League standings, they face a fight to return to the Champions League next season as fourth place Arsenal have three games in hand.
The club will look to appoint a new permanent manager at the end of the season, with Ralph Rangnick only in charge on a temporary deal.
Former United defender Ferdinand has called for a systematic change to put things right at Old Trafford.
"What it [the loss] does show you is that it doesn't matter what players you get together, what talent you get together, you need someone to harness that," he told BT Sport post-match.
"You need someone to harness that. You need a manager to come in and put it all together.
"If you bring in Mbappe and Haaland this summer, United are not going to win the league. It doesn't matter who you bring in, it needs to be from the top down."
