David Moyes Defends Decision To Bring On Noble For Late Penalty

West Ham United manager David Moyes says he has no regrets about bringing on Mark Noble to take a late penalty against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

West Ham lost 2-1 to the Red Devils at the London Stadium despite taking the lead through Said Benrahma. Cristiano Ronaldo got the equaliser for the visitors before former Hammers loanee Jesse Lingard climbed off the bench to snatch all three points for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with a late winner.

The home side had the chance to salvage a point in stoppage time when Luke Shaw was penalized for handball but Moyes’ decision to bring on Noble to convert the spot kick backfired when David De Gea saved his kick.

West Ham have now missed four of their last five penalties, although prior to the game Noble had not missed a penalty since December 2016.

“Do I regret it? Not at all because Mark Noble is one of the best penalty kick takers we’ve got,” said Moyes.

“We had time to think about it, time to make that choice. [It was] my choice, my decision. That is what happens in management, you have to make big decisions. Sometimes they go and sometimes they don’t. Maybe the job is for some people and not for others, that is why you have to take the decisions.

“We had a really good penalty kick taker sitting on the bench, I think I would have been more disappointed in myself if I hadn’t made the decision.

“Because of his record I thought he was the one who would be most suited to taking it.”
