Substitute Lallana Nicks Point For Liverpool Against Man United

Substitute Lallana Nicks Point For Liverpool Against Man United

Manchester United and Liverpool picked a point apiece at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday as they played out a 1-1 draw.

Marcus Rashford’s first half strike was cancelled out by substitute Adam Lallana in the second period ensuring that the hosts halted the visitors’ 17-game winning streak.

Liverpool’s lead at the top has thus been cut to six points while Manchester United are in 13th place on 10 points.

Georginio Wijnaldum tested David de Gea from range when he skipped past Scott McTominay and Fred but the Spaniard was equal to the task in the 13th minute.

Joel Matip sent Sadio Mane away on the right in the 35th minute but Roberto Firmino sent a feeble effort into the hands of De Gea when he got on the end of the Senegalese’s decent cut-back.

Marcus Rashford scored his first goal from open play in the league this season when he connected Daniel James’ cross from the right in the 36th minute but despite some deliberation about a foul by Victor Lindelof on Divock Origi in the build-up, the goal was allowed to stand.

Mane thought he had found Liverpool’s equalizer when he brought down a long ball in the United penalty area before slotting past De Gea. However, a VAR check indicated the ball struck Mane’s arm and the goal was ruled out.

Fred sent a decent long range effort past Alisson’s right post in the 85th minute but just a minute later the visitors found a way through the hosts defence.

Andy Robertson’s cross from the right evaded the entire Manchester United backline and substitute Adam Lallana was on hand at the far post to tap into an empty net for his first league goal in over two years.

Liverpool pressed for the winner but the closest they could come was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s stoppage time long range effort which flew past De Gea’s right post and their long winning streak ends at 17 games.
