Spurs and Sevilla Seal Swap Deal Involving Lamela and Bryan Gil

Tottenham Hotspur and Sevilla have completed a swap deal involving Erik Lamela and Bryan Gil.

Lamela has joined the Spanish La Liga outfit in a player-plus-cash transfer, with Tottenham also paying Sevilla £22m for Gil’s services.

Lamela joined Spurs in a then club record £30m deal from AS Roma in the summer of 2013 and made 257 appearances in his eight years in North London, scoring 37 goals, which included the Premier League’s goal of the season in the 2020/2021 campaign in the North London derby against Arsenal.

Gil, who is part of the Spain squad at the ongoing Olympic games in Tokyo, came through Sevilla’s youth ranks and graduated to the first team in 2019.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Eibar, scoring four goals in 28 La Liga games. He has won three caps for the Spanish national team but was not called up for EURO 2020.

"We are delighted to announce the signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla, with Erik Lamela joining the Spanish club as part of the deal,” Tottenham’s official statement announcing the deal read.

"The exciting young winger, 20, joins us on a contract until 2026. Subject to international clearance, Bryan will join up with the club at the conclusion of the Olympics in Tokyo where he is representing Spain."

"Going the other way to Spain, Erik joined us from AS Roma in August 2013. Over the next eight seasons, the all-action attacking midfielder made 257 appearances in all competitions, helping us reach three cup finals and finish second and third twice in the Premier League.

"Now 29, Erik took his tally of caps for Argentina to 25 during his time here. A club man through and through, we wish Erik all the best for the future."
