Xhaka says his team-mates are ‘f*cking amazing' after winning 5-4 on penalties against one of the competition’s acclaimed favourites in Bucharest.
The Swiss had to dig deep to right their earlier wrongs in order push the game into extra time and penalties.
After taking an early lead thanks to Haris Seferovic, Switzerland failed to double their advantage on 55 minutes when Ricardo Rodriguez missed a penalty.
The Frenchmen quickly turned the game on its head with Karim Benzema’s brace on 57 and 59 minutes respectively.
Paul Pogba seemed to have sealed Les Blues’ victory with a stunning effort on the 75th minute mark but the Red Crosses put up a show in the dying embers to pull parity thanks to Seferovic’s second goal of the night and a sublime strike from substitute Mario Gavranovic.
The game went to extra time and eventually penalty shootout which Yan Sommer proved to be the hero of the night by saving Kylian Mbappe’s penalty to win the game for Vladimir Pektovic’s men.
Xhaka, who was given the Man-of-the-Match award after the game, was happy with his team-mates performance against the World champions.
"Sorry to say this word, but it's f*cking amazing, man," Xhaka told UEFA after the game. "We can make score the 2-0 and finish the game but the penalty we missed breaks us a little bit.
"After 3-1, to come back like this against France, to show big character, this team is f*cking amazing, man."
