Arsenal Needed The Victory Over West Brom – Arteta

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has insisted his men deserved to win against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Gunners bounced back from their Europa League disappointment to beat the Baggies 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta’s side had not won at home since their victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on March 14; a run of six winless matches and the Spaniard said they needed such win to boost their confidence.

Emile Smith Rowe gave Arsenal the lead on 29 minutes with a nice volley after a cross from Bukayo Saka before Nicolas Pepe cut inside from the right flank and curled an effort beyond the outstretched goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

Matheus Pereira pulled one back for the visitors on 67 minutes to set a nerve-shredding and nail-biting end to the game, but Willian sealed the hosts’ win with his first goal of the season with a brilliant free-kick late in the game.

"We needed that win. It has been a while since we won at home. We scored three fantastic goals and we had some great spells in the game. When we conceded the goal we did look nervy,” Arteta said after the game.

"We knew the necessity to win the game. They scored out of nothing and then threw everything at you, they knew the situation they were in and we struggled to play that kind of game.

"We scored three fantastic goals but we missed some big chances too.

"Europe is a completely different game, different context. There were things we could have done much better.

"Going forwards we know Saka is a threat, he gives you something unique. He adapted. We believed we were going to attack against them and he gave us a lot of joy.

"We will try to win every match and see where we finish. The only thing we can do is win our games."
