Valencia Issue Statement Over Diakhaby Racial Abuse

Valencia Issue Statement Over Diakhaby Racial Abuse

La Liga side Valencia have officially issued a statement backing defender Mouctar Diakhaby following allegations that he was racially abused over the weekend.

The Frenchman walked off the pitch in Valencia’s game against Cadiz in La Liga on Sunday after he claimed defender Juan Cala used a derogatory word against him.

The duo were involved in an altercation on the 30th minute mark which interrupted the flow of the game.

Diakhaby walked off the pitch afterwards and he was followed by his team-mates but the 24-year-old urged them to go back and play as he feared they may face a threat of docked points for abandoning the game.

The game eventually continued and Valencia lost 2-1 thanks to Cala’s 14th minute strike and Marcos Mauro’s late goal.

Los Che then issued a statement backing its player, writing on social media: "WE SUPPORT YOU MOUCTAR."

“There should be no doubt that Valencia CF will defend Mouctar Diakhaby to the fullest, and fight to ensure that such lamentable events are not repeated.”

“We spoke with La Liga this morning to encourage them to also see their investigation through to the end.

“This incident cannot be left behind, and cannot be repeated with any other player for any other team.”

“We are saddened that, following the incident, there was no reaction to stop the game, and that it was our players who were the ones to leave the field of play.

“There cannot be a lack of action in light of these types of situations.

“From now on, we would like to see some kind of reaction to change these protocols, in order to protect those who are vulnerable.

“If we don’t change this, then it will give a bad example to everybody.”
