Manchester City heavily bolstered their squad ahead of the 2017/18 season and took the Premier League by storm, winning the title with ease by reaching 100 points.
Manchester United had a good season and eventually finished second albeit 19 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men.
Mourinho was sacked the following season and the Red Devils have not hit similar heights since.
Formosinho has posited that the Portuguese coach would have brought the coveted league title to Old Trafford if not for City’s opulence.
“We weren’t champions, it’s true,” he told Record.
“But we won the Europa League, the League Cup, the Super Cup and, in a fight with a Manchester City, who did not fulfil, as proved later, the Financial Fair Play, we were runners-up at a time when, having sporting truth, we would’ve been champions.”
“People may ask why he’s the best,” Formosinho added on Mourinho.
“I answer that because he thinks faster and comes up with solutions faster.
“When talking about the growth of others at the tactical level, he goes far ahead strategically. He’s different for the better. I’d even say much better.”
Manchester City spent a mammoth €317.5m in that season alone on players like Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Ederson, Danilo, Douglas Luiz, Jack Harrison, Olarenwaju Kayode, and Luka Ilic.
