Lazio Coach Concedes Title Defeat After Lecce Loss

Lazio head coach Simone Inzaghi has admitted his side are no longer thinking about the Serie A following a 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Lecce on Tuesday evening.

The hosts came from a goal down to inflict Le Aquile’s second defeat in three days thanks to goals from Khouma Babacar and Fabio Lucioni.

Lazio were hoping to hoist their first Serie A title since the 1999-2000 season, as they were just a point behind leaders Juventus before the season was halted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Rome-based team’s dream to win the league was dented after the campaign resumed, having lost three of their last five league games.

Inzaghi has blamed injuries for his men’s poor form after the resumption of the season and insists Lazio’s altered dream is to secure Champions League football next season.

“The problem is that we returned from the lockdown with injuries,” the Italian coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“This limited our ability to rotate the squad, some played today as well who weren’t at their best.”

“We lost three games in 15 days, after going without defeat for many months, so that’s not a coincidence.”

“I can only thank the team for all they have done. It’s natural there’s disappointment considering how well we were doing before the break, as some of the absentees really would’ve made a big difference.”

“The performance arrived despite many players being only at 50 per cent.”

“Our dream must continue, which is to qualify mathematically for the Champions League. We hope to achieve it as soon as possible, but that is our only objective.”
