Maddison Disappointed By Omission From Latest England Squad

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has expressed disappointment at not being called up for England’s upcoming international games but has vowed to get back into contention.

Gareth Southgate did not include Maddison in his 29-man squad for next week’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland and Nations League games versus Belgium and Iceland earlier when it was announced earlier on Thursday.

Maddison put the disappointment behind him and starred in Leicester City’s 4-0 victory over Portuguese side Braga in the Europa League, scoring one goal and laying on an assist.

The 23-year-old has just a solitary cap to his name for the Three Lions.

"Yeah, if I'm being honest,” Maddison told BT Sport when asked if he felt aggrieved by the snub.

"I want to be in the England squad, that's what I dreamt of as a little boy. I've had a taste of it and I want more.

"I'm back fit now, I'm firing, getting the minutes in the legs. I had a long injury last year, I've had a couple of knocks this year so I haven't had consecutive run of games.

"I can't control whether I'm in the England squad or not, I don't pick the team. I can only concentrate on what I'm doing at Leicester and [we're] second in the Premier League, top in the Europa League so [if I] keep my form good for Leicester then the rest will take care of itself."

Maddison has made 10 appearances for Leicester so far this season, scoring three goals.
