The La Liga giants scored two goals in the final minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw at the Borussia-Park.
Real Madrid surprisingly lost their Champions League opening match at home against Shakhtar Dontesk and were looking to atone for their sins against Marco Rose’s men.
The hosts scored twice in each half thanks to Marcus Thuram’s brace and were coasting home with an emphatic win before Brazil midfielder Casemiro set up Karim Benzema, who cut the deficit in the 87th minute.
Casemiro then turned scorer, bagging a stoppage-time equalizer to salvage Los Merengues’ Champions League campaign.
“The result shows the character of the team. We deserved the draw and I think more. I keep the reaction and it is a very important point,” Zidane told reporters after a hard fought draw in Germany.
"It is clear that the situation was difficult and now we are in the same situation as last year. The players have fought until the end and by playing like this, things will turn out for us"
Zidane admitted that Real Madrid lacked the cutting edge and seemed disappointed not to get the win but he insists his men deserved at least a draw.
“We played a good game throughout the match . It is true that we lacked something, because we did not win. We believe in the game plan and we deserved the draw."
