England Head Coach hails Mount After Belgium Heroics

Mason Mount scored the winning-goal as England scraped past Belgium 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, and head coach Gareth Southgate has hailed the Chelsea midfielder for his stellar performance.

Belgium drew first blood from the penalty spot through Romelu Lukaku 16 minutes into the game but the hosts pulled back thanks to Marcus Rashford, who slotted home the second penalty of the game six minutes before the break.

Mount gave England the lead midway through the game with a sumptuous effort and that was enough to hand the Three Lions their 20th win out of their last 21 competitive home games.

Speaking to the media after the game, Southgate was impressed with Mount’s tactical awareness against the Belgians.

"He’s a top player. He can receive the ball under pressure. He’s intelligent with his movement. He’s, of course, still learning. To find space in the first-half was difficult. But in a tactical game where it’s just as important defensively what the forwards do,” the English tactician told reporters.

Mount has been widely criticized by fans and the media for getting many matches under his belt with Chelsea, but Southgate believes the former Vitesse and Derby County man is underrated.

He added: “To have a player like him who can do both sides, the way that Marcus Rashford did, the way Dominic Calvert-Lewin did. I read a lot of things about Mason and I think he’s a very underappreciated player – but not by us.”
