Bayern Sent Message To Rivals With Schalke Mauling, Says Flick

Bayern Munich head coach Hans-Dieter Flick was satisfied with his side’s performance in an 8-0 win over Schalke 04 on Friday night and insists the emphatic victory was a message delivered to the rest of their Bundesliga rivals.

erge Gnabry scored a hat-trick and Leroy Sane scored on his Bayern Munich debut as they opened the new Bundesliga season with demolition of Schalke.

The Bavarians won the treble last season and Flick believes putting eight past Die Knappen means Bundesliga rivals will be wary of Bayern Munich as they are still in good form.

"It was superb for us. Before the game we wanted this to be a game that would define where we are at this stage and my players did it very well," the German coach told reporters after the game.

"We wanted to show that in this season again we are here."

Despite the Bundesliga champions’ bright start to the season, Flick admitted that there is still a long way to go.

He added: “We just had the first game. Let us go slowly here. But it was important to show we are on the right path."

Schalke head coach David Wagner labeled Bayern as the best team in the world and has urged his side to put this seismic defeat behind them.

"Bayern were in sensationally good form," said Wagner.

"At the moment Bayern are most likely the world's strongest team. They showed that today.

"We did not play well at all. We now need to shake it off and show a reaction (next week)."
