Solskjaer Retains Maguire As Man United Captain Despite Legal Issues

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Harry Maguire will remain Manchester United captain despite the defender’s legal issues in Greece.

Maguire was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos last month while on holiday with family and friends and was subsequently found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated bribery attempts during an altercation with law enforcement officials.

The 27-year-old was handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence but after launching an appeal the initial verdict was quashed and a retrial is expected to be conducted at a later date.

Maguire was withdrawn from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark at the start of the month due to his troubles.

Questions had been raised as to whether Maguire will continue his role as captain at Old Trafford but Solskjaer insists the former Leicester City defender will continue to keep the armband.

"Of course, Harry, as you said, had a difficult summer. He didn’t have a long break," Solskjaer said in an interview with MUTV.

"His break was different to others as we gave him a few more days and, after, he’s come back and looked fine.

"He’s handled it really well and, of course, I’ll be here to support him. He is going to be our captain. We’ll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run.

"For me, he is a top, an absolute top human being and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry performing at his best."

Maguire joined United from Leicester City last summer and was named captain of the side in January following the departure of Ashley Young to Inter Milan.
