Benzema Plays Down His Real Madrid Legendary Status

In-form Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has insisted that he is ‘no legend’ after scoring his 50th Champions League goal for the Los Blancos in their win against Galatasaray on Wednesday night.

The former Olympique Lyonnais striker scored twice as Real Madrid comfortably won 6-0 against the Turkish champions.

The French striker has now scored more goals in the Champions League than Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano, who was the club’s third highest scorer in the competition with 49 goals.

Only Raul Gonzalez (66) and Cristiano Ronaldo (105) have scored more Champions League than the 31-year-old in the Los Blancos’ history.

"We scored goals, played well and did not concede. It was a real party with the fans," Benzema said, via the club's website after the game.

"I am no legend. When I signed for the club I never thought I'd get to this point and I am so happy.

"I try to help the team and be at my best, I want to continue to help. I feel very confident, if I can help my team-mates by talking to them out there, then I will, that is down to my experience in this club."

Benzema lauded Rodrygo Goes, a player who eclipsed Benzema’s performance on Wednesday night by scoring a perfect hat-trick.

But he admitted that both Rodrygo and fellow summer signing Eden Hazard will only get better with time.

"Rodrygo looked very good to me, he's not afraid. He plays the ball and I love it when I see a young man playing like that," he said.

"As for Hazard, he's a great player and our connection is very good. Little by little you'll see what a great player he is."
